February 2009 — Present (11 months)
I work at Nokia Gate 5 in Berlin, the former navigation software company bought by Nokia in 2006. Here I work on location based services as a Java server side specialist, which makes it very much a more business oriented continuation of my previous career in research on indoor location based systems. I've been so far active in different teams and in different roles, including as a release manager, architect, team lead, scrum master, and software engineer.

December 2005 — January 2009 (3 years 2 months)
I worked in the Smart Space Lab in the Nokia Research Center doing research on locally connected services and indoor location based services. This included doing technical work related to designing and implementing innovative solutions in this space, driving technical & research direction of the team, managing engineers and master thesis students, representing Nokia in the EU FP7 project Sensei on sensors and actuators as well as other project and external collaborations; and of course doing publications and IPR.
See http://www.jillesvangurp.com/cv for more details and http://www.jillesvangurp.com/publications for publications related to my work at NRC and earlier life in academia.

October 1998 — September 2000 (2 years )
I moved to Sweden in 1998 to start work on my Ph. D. in software engineering. In 2000 I moved back to the Netherlands to complete my Ph. D. at the university of Groningen.
(Information Technology and Services industry)
1997 — 1998 (1 year )
I had a great time in this part time job at the faculty of computer and literature which combined information science and literature geeks in one oddball department. I combined the job with my studies being able to come and go as pleased me. It sure helped that I lived 100 meters from their doorstep, right on the Domplein.. My job involved fooling around with applets and the swing betas on top of JDK 1.1. I created the iconclass applet for browsing iconic and religious art (http://www.iconclass.nl/) and later got involved in the classmate project for creating educational software.
