Dr. Hélder A. Santos is a physical chemist specialized in electrochemistry, biological mimetic models and soft interfaces. In 2003, he obtained his MSc in Chemistry from the Univ. of Porto. In 2007, he obtained his DSc in Chem. Eng. from Helsinki Univ. of Technology. In 2007, Dr. Santos joined the Univ. of Helsinki, Division of Pharmaceutical Technology, as a Postdoctoral Fellow. In 2009, he was appointed Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor (Docent) in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology, an Academy of Finland Research Fellow and Group Leader. Dr. Santos' research is focused on nano-biomaterials, e.g. nanoporous silica/silicon, liposomes and solid lipids for controlled drug delivery, diagnostics and cancer therapy. He has more than 57 refereed articles, including 10 reviews, 8 book chapters and ca. 79 conference proceedings/abstracts. He has supervised 16-MSc students, 2 post-docs and 3-PhDs, and he is currently the supervisor/co-supervisor of 8-PhD students and 2 post-docs. He has also given >50 invited/selected talks in national/international meetings. In 2010, he received the "Talent Prize in Science" awarded by the Portuguese Government and in 2012 the ERC starting grant. He was the Guest Editor for the Curr. Drug Discov. Technol., Curr. Drug Metab. and Biomatter, and an Associate Editor for Versita. He is also an active referee for ca. 39 international journals and research project foundations. Dr. Santos is also an Editorial Board Member for the journals of Drug Deliv. Lett., Biomatter, Inter. J. Innov. Biol. and Chem. Sci., Pharm.Nanotech., World J. Pharmacol., J. Biopharm. Biotech., and BioMed Res. Inter. He is also the Editor for the book "Porous Silicon for Biomedical Applications" (Woodhead Publishing) and for the Mesoporous Biomaterials journal. Dr. Santos’ research has attracted competitive funding worth more than 2.7 M€ from the Academy of Finland, the University of Helsinki Research Funds and the ERC.
