A 112 Mb/s Full Duplex Remotely-Powered Impulse-UWB RFID Transceiver for Wireless NV-Memory Applications
- Solid-State Circuits, IEEE Journal of Date of Publication: April 2011
- April 2011
Authors: Jarmo Arponen, Pelissier, M. ; Jantunen, J. ; Gomez, B., Masson, G. ; Dia, S. ; Varteva, J. ; Gary, M.A dual band symmetrical UWB-RFID transceiver for high capacity wireless NV-Memory applications is reported. The circuit exhibits a figure of merit of 58 pJ/b and 48 pJ/b in Tx and Rx respectively, with a 112.5 Mb/s data rate capability. It operates in the 7.9 GHz UWB frequency band for full duplex communication and is remotely powered through a UHF CW signal. The circuit has been implemented in a 0.13 μm 1.2 V CMOS process.

System and method for distributed persistent computing platform
- United States Patent 8,332,606
- Issued December 11, 2012
Inventors: Jarmo Arponen, , Antti LappeteläinenExample embodiments of the invention are disclosed for an adaptive computing platform wherein a reader/writer device uses distributed, external memory resources as non-volatile memory blocks to provide distributed execution-in-place capability for the reader/writer device, such as a mobile phone, to enhance the processing power of the device. The execution architecture of the reader/writer device is scalable and adaptive to accommodate variations in the speed, size, and other characteristics of different external memory blocks it uses as it moves from one external memory block to another.

Method of and apparatus for synchronisation
- Europe Patent EP2053756
- Issued November 28, 2012
Inventors: Jarmo Arponen, Joni Jantunen, Iiro Jantunen, Bertrand Gomez, Michael PelissierThe present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for synchronising a transceiver to an incoming signal. Particularly but not exclusively the invention relates according to at least one non-limited embodiment to a method and an apparatus for synchronisation for pulsed wireless communication such as pulsed Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radio frequency (RF) communication
between a first transceiver and a second transceiver. -
Connectivity information sharing in a smart space having a multiplicity of radio access technologies
- United States Patent 7831717
- Issued November 9, 2010
Inventors: Jarmo Arponen, Arto Palin, Timo O. Eriksson, Joni Jantunen, Juha-matti Tuupola, Olli Tyrkkö, Sampo SovioAn apparatus and method for storing and maintaining in a smart space device connectivity information of devices of the smart space including a plurality of disparate radio access technologies. The connectivity information is propagated to at least one other device of the smart space and is used for selecting an optimal distribution route for information to be shared in the smart space. Technologies such as NoTA, BillBoard and Whiteboard can be used.

Method and Apparatus for Managing Access Rights of users to Information Spaces
- United States Patent 8,447,974
- Issued May 7, 2013
An approach is provided for managing access rights of users to information spaces using signatures stored in a memory tag. A signature manager caused reading of a memory tag to initiate a request, from a device, for an initial access to an information space. The request includes an authorization signature associated with the device. The signature manager determines a level of access to the information space by comparing the authorization signature against a lattice of signature primitives associated with the information space. The signature manager then modifies the authorization signature based on the determination and stores the modified authorization signature for validation of subsequent access to the information space by the device.

Universal Local Storage
- January 2008 to Present
Universal Local Storage (ULS) project developed open platform for implementing passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags with a mass memory.
Such wireless memory is used for the transfer and storage of data between battery-free memory tags located in objects and wireless memory hosts typically within mobile electronic devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.
Open architecture is contributed to the JEDEC standardization http://www.jedec.org/news/pressreleases/jedec-announces-plans-standardize-non-volatile-wireless-memory -
MiNAMI - MIcro-Nano integrated platform for transverse Ambient Intelligence applications
- January 2007 to December 2009
Team Members: Jarmo Arponen, Joni Jantunen, Jaakko Varteva, Iiro JantunenMINAmI project addresses challenges related to the implementation of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) applications, where the personal mobile device acts as a gateway.
The physical environment can be loaded with interesting and context-related information, easily and naturally accessible to the user. Information is in the tags and sensors embedded in physical surroundings and everyday objects, and it can be anything from sensor measurements from the environment or the user itself, to a piece of music or the latest news. The user can wirelessly access this information content by just touching or scanning close tags and sensors with their mobile phone. The phone also enables wireless connection to the internet. As the interaction can be tied to a specific place, object, and time, the user is served with context-related information and services. Develop and demonstrate a novel high-data-rate, wireless near/intermediate-field readout technique for passive memory tags and their interrogators. -
LiveSite: the world's first WCDMA implementation
- October 1998 to December 2001
Team Members: Jarmo ArponenNokia has today launched the Nokia LiveSite platform, the world's first WCDMA implementation, which is compatible with the latest 3GPP standards for 3rd Generation networks. The Nokia LiveSite, available before the end of this year is a key building block for Nokia's operator customers, in introducing fully 3GPP standards compliant commercial 3rd Generation networks. These will become available from Nokia during the third quarter 2001.
Nokia LiveSite is a major step forward for operators in enhancing their Mobile Internet and Multimedia application evaluation and demonstration capabilities by introducing the 3GPP Release 99 compatible Nokia LiveSite platform. It will allow operators to develop, test and evaluate applications, such as mobile web-browsing, multimedia messaging and video telephony in a real 3G air interface environment.
Nokia intends to install the first of these platforms in Nokia's Mobile 3G Demonstration Centres in Europe and in other Nokia 3G test centres across the world. Nokia LiveSite platforms will also be delivered to Nokia customers before the end of this year, offering them a true 3GPP standards compliant application evaluation and demonstration environment. -
FRAMES: Future Radio widebAnd Multiple accEss Systems. ACTS project 090. ACTS: Advanced Communications Technologies & Services.
- January 1995 to December 1998
Team Members: Jarmo ArponenThe main focus for the project has been (and still is) the radio interface definition. Experience gained in the European RACE projects (ATDMA, CODIT and MoNet) was used as a starting point, to provide the techniques required for a high througput, high capacity third generation mobile telecommunication system.
In Core Task System Development (CT Sys) the Physical Layer Multiple Access is being developed, while protocols in the Data Link and Network Layer are investigated.
The Core Task Demonstrator (CT Demo) will validate and demonstrate the radio interface.
The past three years have seen the development of ETSI SMG UTRA concepts (intended for submission to the ITU) based largely on the FRAMES project's proposals.
A dual mode UTRA concept has been devised, using Wideband CDMA for the paired band (1920-1980 and 2110-2170 MHz) and combined TD-CDMA for the unpaired bands (1900-1920 and 2010-2025 MHz).
